Dell has an outlet store where they sell computers that have minor dings or have been returned. They refurbish these computers and sell them for a significant discount. I recently purchased a Dell Precision 3660 Workstation, as equipped that typically sold for over $4500. I searched for high end workstations and found one configured the way I wanted on Dell Outlet. When you decide on what configuration you want keep checking back on the price over several days as they change all the time. When you do this, you will have a good sense of how much of a discount you are likely to get. Also note that the same configuration may be listed multiple times each with a different price. I couldn't figure out why they would list the PCs configured the same for different prices. Select the one that is cheapest. My suggestion is NOT to order online. Once you find exactly what you are looking for and the cheapest price for it, call a Dell Outlet sales rep. Tell them the PC you are interested in but it is more than what you budgeted. The rep will talk to his/her manager and come back with an additional 5% discount. Ask if he can do 10% and most likely he will agree.
Just to give you an idea of how significant the savings are, when I was looking to purchase the Dell Precision 3660 Workstation with a price of over $4500, I was able to get it for under $1200. Just the video card in the PC was worth $1200 if purchased separately.
